Why do you do what you do?
Jan 11, 2023Why do you do what you do?
So many people can’t explain in words why they do what they do. They rationalize with their logical brain because they make decisions from their emotional limbic brain and that doesn’t come from logic. If I ask you why you love your job you will probably tell me some superficial or general reasons that describe what a reasonable person would expect from that type of job. You wouldn’t get into how the job made you feel or what lead you to that job in the first place. The way we describe things are usually general in nature, so we don’t expose our deep-down self to the world.
You must really explore why you do something in order to really love what you do and be able to sell yourself to the world. Marketing is all about emotions. People buy what makes them feel good even if it is not rational. They don’t even know how to explain it. If you know your why you will be able to influence the behavior of others and get them to emotionally get involved and then they will follow you, trust you, and buy what you are selling from that emotional place.
Think about how emotional people get about a sports team. I am an avid Cincinnati Bengals and Reds fan. When they win it really makes me happy. What is the real reason it makes me happy (WHY?) Allegiance to a team represents community. You feel connected and bonded with the other people that also choose that allegiance. It feels like a family that shares the love of that team. In the whole scheme of things, it is just a game, but it doesn’t feel that way when everyone is watching and cheering together. The energy that can be felt in a room or stadium full of people is amazing and that feeling can’t be explained. That is what we like to call momentum. It is so powerful.
I can’t tell you how many times I have been out of town wearing a Cincinnati Bengals jersey when someone starts a conversation and we bond because we either both love the same team or they love a rival team and we have some fun back and forth conversation, yet we still bond.
A sense of community is powerful and makes us feel like we belong and that is a basic need we all have as human beings. If you are not a sports fan, then you can apply this to anything. I use sports because it really is an emotional event.
Whatever you choose to do in your life, find a community that makes you feel like your team just won the Superbowl. Find that connection and feel that sense of belonging. You will give from the heart and you will feel loved. You can only win when you come from this place.
My mom was the biggest Ohio State Buckeyes fan on the planet. I think she bought everything they ever made with their logo on it. Trust me, sports can make a grown man cry. Talk about emotional.
FIND THAT THING THAT MAKES YOU CRY AND SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE. FIND YOUR COMMUNITY!!!
WHY am I bonding with my community?
WHY do I feel so connected to like-minded people?
WHY do I do what I LOVE?
